Puppy advice

Okay, first off....awwwwhhhhh.

We are looking into getting a puppy for when we move to the farm. Should be soon. This is a puppy that is in one of the neighbouring towns. It is a cross Rottweiler/Kelpie. Anyone had any interaction with this type of cross? Or with either breed? I know Rotti's can have a bad rep, but have also heard a lot of good things about them if they are trained proper. But seriously, I just can't help but love this little pup...

We have a 5 year old and *will* have an infant/toddler*soon*, and want the best type of dog for kids. We also do have cattle and cats on the farm, so we need a dog that won't chase other animals, other than the obvious harassment of cats vs dogs!

Have at it people...a good farm dog, good with kids, and not overly aggressive. What do you think. If you have other suggestions, bring it on.

*note, I am sending subliminal messages to.......well anyone actually, that we WILL have a infant/toddler.....SOON. Hope it works.....*

**Updated-decided no on the puppy. The one that was left was not the one in this picture, but the sister, and had quite a Kelpie look to her. Cute, but not Rotti look, which is what we fell in love with. Plus found out the mom has hip problems, which can be inherited. Plus it was ready to go now, and we won't be on the farm for a few more weeks, and just can't have my mom do the puppy training!**
Cheers

you're becoming a blogger whiz, music and everything. I used to have music, but now the thingy where you can add things won't let me add anything to my blog, not impressed.

The puppy is cute but with kids I'd go with border collie, labs or retrievers. My personal opinion. I'm not sure that rottis are very predictable and you've gotta commit to the training thing with them.

Once again, thanks for your prayers and encouragement this week, it means alot.

I had a rottie cross growing up and he was the BEST dog ever!!!! He was protective of me but not aggressive. My parents have only had rottie crosses since because they love them so much. The first one was great with my sister's kids when they were little and my parents current two are great with Yonas even though he can be a bit of a terror on them. I believe that rottie's have the rep they do because a lot of the people that have rottie's don't have them for or raise them as a family dog. Just my opinion though! That puppy is VERY cute!!!!

All of the best ranch dogs we have ever had were rott mixes...all great with kids. My husband keeps checking the pound for a good rott mix...that is how much he continues to love his childhood dogs. That and he might actually want a dog that weighs more than 7 pounds.

we had the BEST dog for kids-border collie/samoyd cross. border collies are hyper the first year or so , but great with kids. samoyds, from what i've read and seen with our old girl, are very gentle as well. our dog was hyper as a pup, but seemed to know instinctively when she needed to be gentle with a child/baby. no matter whether she had her ears pulled, tail stepped on, food eaten out from under her nose ( iknow, blech) if it was a child, she was unfailingly gentle. (i miss her).
thanks so much for stopping by my blog and for praying. that means so much.

Absolutely no to a rottie. I run a home daycare and my home insurance company will not even insure me if I have a rottie. A collie/austrilian cattle dog mix are the best dogs in the world.

we have a dobbbie/rottie cross and she is the gentlest giant ever. She is great with our kids and we love her to bits - she is a bit of a runner which is an issue on our farm but we built her a pen and that helps.

We also had a border collie, He was just OK with our children. If you look up a dog web site it will tell you that they are not great with younger children. But they would do great on a farm, they are great herding dogs. We now have a golden retriever, he is wonderful with the kids now 4+7. Hope this helps.

Read Dooce.com if you want to know about farm dogs. As for Rotties, I raised them and just lost my Rachel start of june at 11. She was a nut ball. She would attack us (I birthed her, breathed for her!! for a half hour) if we tried to trim her toes. Our male (both were altered early) was a joy. loved kids, they both loved cats. Great dogs. inside dogs. In all my years of being around dogs, I would choose a Pit Bull pup and show it love and you would have the best dog ever. mine is at my feet sleeping and I trust my Grandsons life in his. I have met only one bad Pit Bull and he had literal brain damage. And met 4 off the top of my head of rotten rotties (I have been a trainer/behaviorist for years) and yes, you can teach any pup love, though some you have to put way more work into then others. my little guys brother was more hyper and we placed him due to the baby but no doubt he could have been trained too. Congrats on your new family member. New reader, found you today. xoxo, Kandi Ann

Rotties are good family dogs, however we ran into trouble with our rotti mix and the farm animals so we had to say good bye.

Border collies are very intelligent and as far as I know good with kids (but I was a little older) and great on the farm and with other animals.

Labs are very gentle, good with other animals and children as a genral rule and are still highly protective if they feel you are a threat to their kids.
